Hawthorne City Hall + Park

OotDL developed the preliminary site design for the Hawthorne City Hall renovation and park. In this innovative project a surface parking lot is proposed to become a civic space located between the city’s service hub and main commercial boulevard.  Hawthorne is both a quiet bedroom community in the Los Angeles South Bay and an enterprising home to literal space age companies such as SpaceX.  The 1970s era city hall is currently a small brutalist concrete building across a large surface parking lot from the City’s main commercial boulevard.  The design team studied opportunities to create a more contemporary expression for the civic building and the design of a civic park to serve as a neighborhood green space and citywide venue for festivals, events and outdoor concerts.  An adjacent bank building was envisioned as a park supporting space for food and beverage services, outdoor movie theater and retail space.
